When award-winning architects James Soane and Christopher Ash built a modern house among the medieval cottages of Lavenham in Suffolk, they created a garden which is a successful blend of traditional and contemporary. With architectural skill they have packed a lot into a little space – a typical English lawn edged with lavender, a waist-high wall enclosing a herbaceous border, a mini-meadow no bigger than a living room carpet, a potager, raised vegetable beds and an elegant summerhouse with a green roof.
